Apple released the IIgs in 1986, keeping Apple II compatibility while adding a 16-bit processor, a wider colour palette and an Ensoniq synthesiser far ahead of most home machines for sound.
Its best games used those gains, among them Zany Golf, The Immortal and enhanced Sierra adventures, though the line always sat in the shadow of the Macintosh.
GSplus and other emulators run Apple IIgs software on modern systems.
