Wow thought my brother and I would be the only people still to remember Ancients II existed. We tracked it down to complete a game we recalled from many years ago...
Yes this is Ancient's 1, and sadly if it had been Ancients 2 our task of running it using the web-based DosBox on this site would have been a million times easier! The correct file was located on another website but we had to create a Win 95 virtualbox installation, create an ISO file from the zip folder to mount in virtual box...but the virtual OS then became convinced it was an unwritable CD and it wouldn't run from the virtual HDD (no idea why - odd graphical glitches flowing down the screen in matrixesque lines on attempt)...Anyway we got it running...Then couldn't save due to read/write issues. We completed it in one sitting using the deathstick glitch as we knew we couldn't save (and even killing the wizard with one on our last attempt before our last character would die) and our party were level 4 with the exception of one level 5 on completion... There's an excellent walkthrough for the maps if you google...and compass keeps glitching.
Atrociously written game but great nostalgia value.
Anyway would recommend the site owner source the correct file from the other abandonware website he'll find with actual Ancients 2 on googling. ;-) A nifty browser emulator would have made everything so much simpler! By the way the screenshots are of the correct game even if the file is wrong so if you recognise them as the game you're looking for then that game is indeed Ancients 2: Approaching Evil!

The other two commenters are correct, this download is not only just Ancients 1, but the shareware version of it as well.

The download appears identical to Ancients 1 when I run it, the folder has more files but the game looks the same.
me, too.
