DOS - 1991
Also available on: Amiga

"A serious simulation of the 1973 Yom Kippur War and a future Arab-Israeli War, this product was very detailed. Mouse implementation is is much easier than the designer's last design (Red Lightning), but it still required much time and thought. Recommended for the serious aficionado." [excerpt from M. The Red Army will threaten to intervene should Israel take either of the Arab capitols. The one time it happened to me though the USA threatened the USSR in response and so they never did.

It offers a variety of different scenarios though... I wonder if the Red Army is actually able to intervene and if its scripted in the game.

Is there a sound strategy for winning as either side in this game? With Israel this issue always seems to be Egypt and as the Arabs I find the Syrians to be a major weak spot.

What are some winning strategies?

Thanks!

Never mind, I seem to have figured it out! Turns out I was wrong. As Israel you can funnel your forces to hold the Golan Heights forts. Except for one or two units the Syrian army is rather ineffective and after a few days you can not only retake Mount Hermon (if the Arabs took it at all) but drive deep into the heart of Syria. According to the game manual Israel can gain a bunch of points for taking Damascus and/or Cairo but I believe that there is a negative impact if you do so. (The game gives you a warning if you are about to attack either of these.) I am unsure of what happens if you do so as I never took Damascus!

Alternatively the method to beat Egypt is a mix of strategies. At first, I believed it to be strategically sound to withdraw from the Suez deep into Israel to allow the most amount of time for my armies to group up. This strategy failed though as the Egyptian AI was reluctant to advance too far outside of its SAM cover and when I finally launched a counteroffensive it failed miserably. Alternatively, I tried to hold the BAR forts along the Suez and was mostly succesful, the only problem was that eventually the Egyptians would break through on one of the fronts and collapse my whole line.

So I tried a different strategy, one that appears to work as of now. I pulled back a little ways from the Suez forts, but not much. The Egyptians did break through after a while but by then I had mobilized my forces. As of right now my armies are fighting off sporadic Egyptian attacks. But I believe in a few days an offensive to retake the Suez and perhaps drive into Egypt is possible!

Hello 13 Jan. 2023

Does anyone have a sound strategy for winning as the Israelis in the 1973 scenario? It appears that while Egypt can be contained and eventually forced back fighting in the bottleneck area near the Goland heights with the Syrian army (who is much better and numerous than ours) is hard. Plus for some reason Jordan just will randomly declare war at some point.

I want to know if anyone has any ideas to fight Syria effectively.... Should I fall back and try to hold a defensive line or try to hold the Golan Heights fort positions in hopes that one day a counterattack will be possible?

Also, is there a certain factor that triggers a Jordanian intervention or does that just happen?

This game is a little backwards.... IRL the Syrians were the paper tigers of the Arab coalition and the Egyptians the most powerful but in this game the situation is reversed.

Please help!

Henry:

Yes, but it mostly depends on how you define winning. Egypt's goal (in the real war) was to occupy few miles east of Suez Canal along the entire length of the Canal and stay there under the protection of SAM batteries. To be able to proceed beyond that you will have to exhaust the Israeli air and land power.

Syria needs a lot of air strikes against the advancing counter attack (to the point of using most or all available air strikes there). If you are able to preserve the Syrian army, they are much closer to the strategic locations that need to be occupied.

In my own experience, I had more difficulty playing on the Israeli side. Suffered a lot of damage to my air force that prevented me from using it effectively.

Has someone managed to win Arab 1973 campaign? Seems that Syria can't even defend it's borders.

Works fine, except that it asks for words from the manual as a password to start playing.
