Gore: Ultimate Soldier

Windows - 2002

Developing a first-person shooter can't be easy. Out of all the genres in the market, surely the FPS is the best developed, and the most plentiful. MMORPGs might be hard to get right, but it's all too easy to get an FPS wrong. Given the sheer number on the market, it's no surprise we've seen plenty of diversification in the genre - Deus Ex and System Shock showed how to integrate RPG-like character development, Counter-Strike showed how to get objective-based multiplayer right, and Half-Life brought plot into the picture.

Gore: Ultimate Soldier, a new release from Dreamcatcher, is rather different. Like Serious Sam before it, it ignores recent developments in FPS games to dish out a helping of old-fashioned, fast-paced fun gameplay, without the trappings of plot, realistic weapons, character development or, indeed, many complexities at all. The plot, such as it is, concerns the development of a virtual reality simulator in a post-apocalyptic, late 21st Century world. That's about all you really need to know. Suffice it to say, you need to get out there and shoot some people, you know, just because.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. As many games have shown, plot is not an essential component for an FPS. And Gore does have its share of distinguishing features; its engine, called AMP (no, not AWP) comes with some neat tricks, not least of which is its ability to use resizable polygons at the joints of character models to stretch and compress as they move.

And it does indeed have excellent player character models. They move convincingly, the weapons look like part of the player (no messy hands sticking out,) and sitting in spectator mode watching the other players shows them off well. Armour is also handled well - it occurs on the maps in chunks, for the chest, head, legs etc., and when picked up will appear on the model, making them immune to damage in that area. Once the armour has taken enough damage, it'll drop off, making the player vulnerable again.

Different player models come with different characteristics, such as being faster or able to take more damage. So you can trade off your durability under fire for speed, if you so desire. Each starts with different weaponry. Gore also includes an interesting stamina system. Running, jumping and so on deplete your stamina pool, and when it's out, you'll collapse. The heavier-built characters generally come with more stamina, as you might expect.

Unfortunately, the maps don't impress so much. Coming fresh from the recently-released Soldier of Fortune 2 to Gore is like jumping back three years. Textures are basic, the layout is angular, and you'll soon be feeling like you've run around this army base, mansion, temple or warehouse before.

The weapon selection is about as basic as the maps. Pistols, machine guns of various types, sniper rifles, flamethrower... yes, yes, yes. Many come with alternate fire modes (like the shotgun's somewhat illogical protective shield) but most lack something in the "grunt" department. It's not that they don't damage their targets, but they are missing the feeling of weight and power that other, superior FPSs are able to create. They just don't feel butch enough.

The damage effects don't help this feeling. Hitting an opponent results in bizarre-looking red lumps detaching themselves from their body, falling downwards a little way, then vanishing, rather than satisfying holes and/or detached limbs. It's reminded us of the effects in Mortal Kombat, in fact, back when such things were hip. With a name like Gore (and a "Mature" rating on the box) you'd think they could have had some more fun with it.

Multiplayer modes include deathmatch (straight and team,) Capture the Flag, and Tactical, a Counter-Strike-esque objective-based mode. The latter has a number of sub-modes based on destroying targets, escorting VIPs or escaping, depending on the map. It uses GameSpy Arcade as a server browser, which won't please some people - nevertheless, it does its job, although in a fairly slow and bloated way. A scan of the server list at this fairly early stage shows most of them are run by the publisher; hopefully some more fan-run games will pop up. That said, we didn't have any problems finding an open game.

The single-player reminded us of Serious Sam in its simplicity. And like that Croteam title, Gore is available at around $30 (UK price to be announced), cheaper than your average new game. The enemy AI is basic -- returning fire and running about seems to be their limit -- and without the sheer quantity of foes Sam threw at you, Gore gets pretty old, quickly. It would be well suited to co-op play, but sadly that's nowhere to be seen, which is a shame, as this was one of the biggest selling points for Sam, and it would have livened up Gore single-player no end.

As for the multiplayer, well, it's fun, but no more fun than any other FPS on the market. It certainly doesn't do anything better than Soldier of Fortune 2, and does most things significantly worse. It might be $20 less expensive, but the extra outlay is well worth it. Recommending Gore to anyone is hard, not because it does anything particularly badly, but because it's so depressingly average in almost every respect.

How to Play

In 2008, developers from 4D Rulers re-released the game as free digital version Gore: Special Edition - remaster with fixed bugs, updated graphics and support of Windows Vista. It is a standalone version and works without the disc, also that version should work on Windows 10

Install & play guide (for disc version):

  • Mount the disc image. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 102% or Daemon Tools Lite
  • Install the game
  • After that install patch v1.48
  • Optionally install Server Fix (it also disables DRM so can be used as NoCD)
  • Open the directory with the game and find gore.exe. Right click on gore.exe - Properties - Compatibility - Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP"
  • Switch to the English keyboard layout BEFORE starting the game
  • Launch the game and enter one of serial keys. Play the game
  • The game with fix has been tested on Windows 7, works with no problem, the game supports widescreen

Install & play guide (for digital version):

  • Simply launch the installer and install the game (Server Fix is already included in this version)
  • This version also has been tested on Windows 7, works with no problem, the game supports widescreen

Install & play guide (for Gore: Special Edition):

  • Launch the installer and install the game
  • After that install the patch for Special Edition (just copypaste the files)
  • Switch to the English keyboard layout BEFORE starting the game
  • Launch the game and enter the serial key. Play the game
  • This version has been tested on Windows 7 and Windows 10, works with no problem, the game supports widescreen

Troubleshooting:

  • Server Fix is required if you want to play in the multiplayer, because the game was working through GameSpy servers, and GameSpy is closed. That fix also disables DRM, so you can use it as NoCD
  • At the very first level of the game, "Training Camp", you may have a problem with very unpleasant bug - the player cannot climb over the fence. Having reached the very top, player model stucks at invisible wall and cannot get over to the other side. To pass that section, you need to do the following - go to the net and climb along the most left edge, “lifting” your head up as much as possible, i.e. looking up at the sky. In this case, the character will overcome the obstacle without any problems.
  • That bug doesn't happen in Gore: Special Edition, so it is recommended to install digital re-release

For Gus you need no Patch, only the Standard Edition. You can Play with Offline Bots, just search on Google.

For me i not have Shooter, where you need Bot Mods, because i not use Mods.

@ZORG, the game STILL DOES require the internet connection, it seems. I downloaded the fixed SE version from your link, and tried to run it on my old-gaming WinXP PC that has NO internet at all. But the game still shows the same error as @DRIVER commented: it wants to update somehow or something.

Even if you can manage to get anything to work, you wont be able to play, because the training course at the beginning of the game has a net that you can't get over, similar to how Dead Man's Hand has a ladder at the beginning that can't be gotten over once you climb to the top, except in Dead Man's Hand, you can open the console and type "fly" to get over the ladder.

The updater has been removed in our most recent version...
This is a recreation of the original 2002 site I made that includes both fixed versions (Retail and Special Edition) with working server browsers and the auto updater removed for SE.

You can find players online mostly in the afternoons-midnight (EU time 20:00-00:00 more or less depending on your location), especially on weekends.

@VANCEKRAVEN
What I meant was that you cannot launch the game at all without internet connection because the GoreUpdate.exe thing needs to communicate with some kind of update server first and before main game process can be initiated. ( So I couldn't even play multiplayer mode on lan or something If I tried hard without connection )

This is what it looks like - https://imgur.com/a/MfNvPX3

I'm on Windows 11 right now which could be the culprit in the problem though it doesn't make any sense to me since it obviously is just an Game Updater issue and with internet connection game runs just fine.

Special Edition installation instructions worked fine for me on Windows 10. Hey DRIVER, are you sure you weren't trying to play multiplayer mode? I think that requires an online connection. However, training mode does not.

Driver 09 Aug. 2024

Special edition of the game always requires the internet connection in order to even run and NoCD doesn't circumvent that measure, is there a way to bypass that so it can be run without any connection ?

Does anyone have the Gore Tools for making custom maps? The link I found on their official website redirects me to a Google Drive link that gives out a "You need access" message.

I have a problem with GORE Special Edition
I'm in the end of a level and the next level doesn't load, after a few seconds the game force me into the main menu, again and again. The name of the next level is Space Station. Is there a fix for this?

@NARROW WATCH
"the iso file is corrupted"

Usually old disc images doesn't work correctly with Windows built-in utility for disc images, in many cases that utility detects it as corrupted. Use special utilities like Daemon Tools or UltraISO for old disc image/ISO files

"Did you know this game was made free by the developers sometime in the past?"

Yes, the developers released it as Gore: Special Edition - remaster with fixed bugs, updated graphics and support of Windows Vista. We uploaded it too, that version has been tested on Windows 10, works with no problem

I'm trying the "Setup for digital version 1.48" download now, perhaps it will work.
Did you know this game was made free by the developers sometime in the past? Sadly you cannot use the official website to download it anymore, the links must be all long dead.
