Went to play game - crashed - set it to play under Windows 98/Me compatibly mode - worked.

It's not working, data1.cab won't extract, it says the file is damaged or something

This is probably the first video game I ever played in my life back in the day, so I've always thought about it.

A real classic of a game, but since the installer won't work out of the box, we instead extract it, and have it working that way. You can zip7 the installer itself, then extract data1.cab, and have all of its files put into a folder, and have the game working.
