SpellCraft: Aspects of Valor

DOS - 1992

The first and only product from Asciiware, a small company formed by the formidable team of ex-EA veterans Joe Ybarra (Starflight) and Karl Buiter (Sentinel Worlds), Spellcraft is, like these designers' masterpieces, hard to pigeonhole.

It is a cross-genre romp that mixes RPG spellcasting elements with adventure, strategy, and a heavy dose of action in your quest to thwart the evil wizards. Good game, although some clues are obscure and the awkward action interface will make your fingers tired from repeated clicking.

Even after 23 years, this is one of my favorite games. To the point where I’ve spent unspeakable amounts of time building a guide and walkthrough (including pointing out some of the few, but inevitable glitches). Definitely get the game, and if you get stuck, check out my guide here: https://wilsonjd3.wixsite.com/cphguidesr/spellcraft-aspects-of-valor.

Few tips from an original version player: I'm talking 3.5 floppy disk bought from a CompUSA in the mid 90's.

Number one is not only do you *need* your spell list (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/576126-spellcraft-aspects-of-valor/faqs/49174), originally in the book that came with the game, the amounts aren't really provided by the game, and you can modify spells to make them more powerful once you've successfully created them. Once you've created a spell for the first time (*must* be exact recipe), you can modify the amounts (to a point) of ingredients to modify the stats of the spell. There are max lists as far as how far you can push it available online, but some are better not completely maxing out. Some spells, like Star Healing (one of your most important!), are only affected by some, so pay attention, and you can save some resources. You'll get a feel for it. If you want the maxes, they are in this guide: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/576126-spellcraft-aspects-of-valor/faqs/50095 in section IV.2)

Wanna kill a wizard? Spam Mind Attack (mind level 2, aspect of mad dreams (gold chalice)) until their life is gone, then melée to death with your sword, with a backup of Boil Blood (fire level 2). If you hit them with enough, you should be able to melée them down in a few seconds.

Dispel is an excellent spell that works not only against both illusions (ghosty Air minions), but as well as those damned creature generators wizards will put in their realms. Remember that spat of levels you need to keep killing the creature generators over and over? Dispel will damage them.

When you finally learn the Snowstorm spell (level 4 Air), that will kill almost all of the corporeal creatures in a level, except for illusions and phantasms. Good way to clear levels. Just set and forget, and most of them will die, and you can just walk around, picking up resources.

Only Illusions can come up onto the raised areas in levels. So, if you cast Magic Wings, even in the water level, you can fly up onto raised areas, and most everything won't be able to reach you. You can pick them off with spells, or recharge, then go fight some more. Especially good around the generators, so you can spam them with Dispel without being overrun.

Your Stone Circles in a level (the Stonehenge looking things in each level) will actually damage enemies. Very advantageous in the beginning, but eventually, it will take damage, so it's a way to have enemies chase you and die to a point. 1st level Orcs crumble, harder enemies may wear at it.

Some of the dumber enemies, like orcs, will literally walk themselves off a cliff. If you have orcs chasing you, walk around a big chasm. Their AI will literally straight line themselves down a hole to get to you, taking them out. Good for taking care of a lot of the "kill all of the minions" levels.

Ever wonder where the enemy wizard is? look for a blob of enemies on the mini-map. That's either an enemy generator or the wizard.

...
Death = New game +
1. Choose Earth elemental in tutorial.
2. Abuse duplication trick in tutorial
3. Play until you get ALL 4 words power for Earth disciple
4. Create 7 Lv.4 spell with max modification for barrier, magic sword and orc. Create more for the other element, remember just create 7 for each spell.
5. Use all ingredient and aspect if you want to do NG+ since it won't carry over. Or sell it since the shop will bring over your stuff. But in NG+ the shop won't renew their stock.
6. NG+ trick, dead, goes to death domain and dead again. Choose New Game. Follow tutorial and you will notice all spell still in there.
7. If you abuse NG preparation with duplicate trick. You will have most basic spell but with Lv.4 power with 255 amount
Ex. You will have 7 Lv.4 Magic Sword with 7*255. You will breeze 75% of gameplay with this.
8. If you use other element and repeat 4 times. You will have all powerful spell with standard amount of aspect. Not to mention all exclusive spell for each element will be yours. Master of elements.

This was one of my favorite games growing up! It came with a big manual with a spell book section in the back for writing down recipes for your spells. I thought that was so cool. I replayed it the and almost gotten to the end, the last bit is pretty hard.
