For those attempting to run this on any x64 Windows OS... I'm sorry, you're out of luck.
Austin seems to have hard-coded direct references to native x32 API elements in several of his programs. Reusing code. Unfortunately, this means that several of his slightly older programs, including this one, will always fail when running in Win7x64 or any higher x64 version.
In x32, you have a chance. There are compatibility settings that you can use to make this, or his "Space Combat Simulator," or his "Giant Fighting Robots" type game, "Young's Modulus..." or even his utililties like his "Cruise Altitude Calculator" utility. They all use the same front-end interface, and THAT is what's causing issue. Interestingly, the GAME portion of the code ought to run just fine, on any modern system, but the front-end fails. Startup screen, configuration screen, anything using the custom UI Austin wrote... they all fail, today, on current systems.
So, the only way to run these programs is either on old hardware running old OS's, or on virtual machines running old OS's. And if you try the latter, you need one which provides for "hardware 3D acceleration" within the virtual machine. (That's not all of them, of course. Most VMs, even today, don't allow for "hardware acceleration") VMWare Player and Oracle VM Virtualbox are your best options, but even those are "finnicky" to get going with "hardware 3D acceleration."
Unfortunately, the best option is just to use a newer... or OLDER... version of X-Plane. Which is sad, because v7 is my personal favorite.
Note, v6 and prior run just fine on modern hardware and Win10x64. The issue really came around the time v7 was released, and disappeared again with v9. v7 and, in most cases, v8 are the ones which have issues on current hardware and OS versions.

HI, i've trying to run Xp7 on windows 10 for a long time with no success, this downloads aren't work no matter what I do, (compatibility for old windows version, execute whit collors or resolution reduced, steam launching options for old directx, same for openGl only), at least already start the program, but crashes on the 'select language' screen (same that "XPPlayer"), there are forums from X Plane community that are searching for a solution for this version, but they didn't find anything, apparently FXinteractive (the game distributor) released a patch sometime around 2012, that added the ability to run natively on win vista and 7, but that update are missing and it's link aren't be captured in wayback machine. No one here has found any solution, or I've still missing something, maybe someone from the "myabandonware" team who knows about's internal working process for this type of "old" OS can work on a restoration or rebuild for this magnificent Simulator....I know that many people would be grateful.

X-Plane v7 was the first release, IMHO, in which X-Plane really became a GOOD... dare I say GREAT... flight sim. All the prior releases (and I tried every single Windows release from the first one, mind you!) were... "interesting"... but not especially ENJOYABLE.
Later revisions of X-Plane have added a lot of extra GLITZ... fully-realized 3D cockpits, prettier graphics, more detail, more special effects... but have never beaten this one, which set the standard for how the program actually RUNS.
If you've never tried X-Plane, absolutely give v7 a shot. It's a phenomenal sim, even if the graphics aren't quite up to the photorealistic standards modern kids seem to expect. DO get the "global scenary" add-on disk, which makes it possible to literally fly anywhere on the planet from anywhere on the planet. Also, if you can find it, you might enjoy trying out the MARS SCENERY add-on, which provides a fully-realilzed (based upon radar mapping of the actual planet) Mars environment, complete with the different atmosphere (much thinner, so much less lift!) and gravity (~1/3 that of Earth) found there.
One of the fun aspects of X-Plane is that, unlike most other sims, it actually MODELS AERODYNAMICS... rather than building a model derived from an actual plane. Yes, it's possible to model the performance of, say, an F-22 with extreme detail in a dedicated sim. But in X-Plane, it actually CALCULATES THE PERFORMANCE, based upon actual aerodynamic laws. It may be the only true SIMULATOR out there, with others being sort of "simulator-simulators."
In X-Plane, you can make your own aircraft (it's part of the base installation) and see how well it would actually fly. Put the wings too far backwards and your plane won't make it off the ground. Use overpowered engines and it will literally rip them off your aircraft at full throttle. Misdesign the tail of the aircraft and end up with a dangerously unstable, or dangerously unmaneuverable, aircraft (Note, those are not the same thing, they're OPPOSITES.)
As an aerospace engineer, myself, I find this aspect of X-Plane to be TREMENDOUSLY ENJOYABLE. Designing an aircraft capable of flying on Mars, given its very thin atmosphere, was a real challenge. But to me, very rewarding, too!
And if you like this, please, consider buying the most recent version. It has everything this has, plus all that extra "glitz." And X-Plane is made by a small team of private individuals, not a huge "Microsoft/Ubisoft/Electronic Arts" corporation. Austin Meier, founder of Laminar Research and chief developer of the sim, is a great guy, too... a true sim lover, himself, which is why he created this, initially, from scratch! I generally don't object to "borrowing" from EA or the like, but Austin needs the income to keep producing this sort of content. Just my 2cents... :)

Cool I would never expect a very old version of x plane to be here. I could finally play x plane on my crappy laptop. Thanks a lot
