Bloodwych

DOS - 1991
Also available on: Amiga - Amstrad CPC - Atari ST - Commodore 64 - ZX Spectrum

This PC conversion of an Amiga dungeon romp didn't fare as well as the Amiga version, despite its being an excellent RPG that allows 2 players to play simultaneously. Innovative spells, cool monsters, good interface, and pleasant graphics make this a severely underrated RPG that deserves wider recognition.

Too bad the data disk was never ported to the PC. Also check out Hexx from this site, another solid RPG from the same designers that is essentially Bloodwych with better graphics.

Has anyone ever tried to recruit the first monsters that appear? Cuz that's what I did, they don't attack first so I have time to communicate with them and recruit them and they immediately say yes 😊🙌🤗

gog is just offering the dos version but prohibits free download of all other versions. does that mean, nobody can play amiga/atarist/c64 versions, anymore? all retrogamers know that every platform has its own appeal!

In the Amiga version you can get mithril stuff from your illusions. Summon an illusion and quickly "sweet talk" it. Ask what it has to sell. Choose the mithril item you want. Give the illusion a key or other item of low value and ask 'Will you accept this?' and quickly answer 'Yes' before it has time to respond. The mithril item is now yours. The illusion will get pissed and attack, but illusions will die at the first hit. Do not try with summons..you will get fried :)

Choose the ninja character and backstab the enemies for an enormous damage bonus :)

Flay (the skeleton character) doesn't need food and so is good to play alone.

This game is a masterpiece of linear situation based dungeon crawl. As its linear you focus only on the puzzle/task currently at hand. Don't expect rich backstory or other such RPG fare, this is adventuring, hack-and-slash, puzzle-solving at its finest.

Solve interesting dungeon puzzles, find new equipment, level up for more power, simple, and brilliant!

The best spell is 'confuse' (blue/moon spell). It spins monsters in place; cast it when they face you so they are turned around and you will never be hit, rendering armour and vitality irrelevant.

If you play on DOS, I believe custom/quickstart parties are bugged and you cannot progress beyond a certain point AFAIK. You must use the preset party.
