Found a Dos version working here : https://archive.org/details/GTA1W10 Full iso inside, with DOS + Windows versions. - Windows version crashing. - DOS version ok :) . Laggy menu but game OK !
Change control : edit C:\GTA\C\GTA\gta.bat : change : GTA24.exe with : K.exe ... then double click on icon on desktop, which is pointing to "C:\GTA\Grand Theft Auto.bat" If you want to direct play, change back "k.exe" to "gta24.exe"
Have a nice play :)

You 'used' to be able to download GTA I & II directly from Rockstar, not sure if it's still available there though. I never found the London expansion available via Rockstar until seeing them here. I still have my original disks somewhere in the attic.
I loved the original games; in fact, I preferred them to the 3D versions until they released the expansions to GTA IV as loved the biker expansion (being an ex motorcyclist and used to work for Pony Express UK as a motorcycle courier).

On the DOS, it always says it's a illegal command and on Windows, it says the CD ain't in. This is unplayable.

To run the game, you should be able to navigate to GTA directory - GTAWIN - run settings.exe or launch Grand Theft Auto
For DOS - GTADOS, then run GTA8 for low resolution, GTA24 for high resolution, or GTAFX for Direct3D from 3DFX support. GTA8 and GTA24 numbers refer to 8bit colours and 24bit colours respectively.
I wouldn't bother with GTADOS.
I believe F11 allows you to change resolution in game.

The German PC magazine "Chip" was allowed to freely distribute GTA1 in 2003 (possibly as a marketing campaign to raise hype for a new GTA), and apparently never got a request to pull the file: https://www.chip.de/downloads/Grand-Theft-Auto-GTA_13007686.html
P.S. I looked on the Steam site, and the game is not available for purchase anymore, ostensibly because of compatibility problems with Windows 10.

The version you would of gotten on Steam no longer exists on Steam. It's sorta free, but you can still get it on the PS Classic, but in it's Pal format.

The PC version of this game isn't available for purchase anywhere, and I think that would warrant it being re-added to the "abandonware" classification. Before anyone says "there's literally a Steam link and a PS Classic link," if you click on the Steam link, there is no purchase option. The only thing that seems like it could help is a link to Rockstar's GTA Classics download area, which has stopped hosting it for download a while ago. And, the PS Classic is a console that costs $100, which is too much for a single game, and I'm specifically looking for the PC version.

Game runs but I'm having a serious frame rate issue. I get anywhere from 1-5 fps, which is horrid to say the least. I'm using a Surface Pro 3 (64 gb ssd model w/ 4 gbs of ram and integrated graphics)

I never played this when it came out, and I just can't figure out how anybody did. The from the top camera angle and speed with which it moves is atrocious, vomit inducing, and gives me seasickness. Can't even play it.

i did just recognized the familiar galaxians figures at every comment. it is so cool, how it is animated. i have also did played so many galaxians clones, or so on my win 98, or so.

downloading right now. i didn't even know that just the istaller is 328 mb. then how big what that it installs? anyway it won't effect the computer, i trust in this site so don't worth it that i would going to download the Sandbox sec system. i hope that this site will not abuse my trust.

I have pointed up on you, just 'cause you did tell what is your problem. Anyway it's maybe cause the game that you play from the CD. and i will download it soon and run it in dosbox, just cause in 2004 i did played it with some criteries:
#1:from the CD #2:dos version with win 98 #3:always used the troy char, just cause it had all the levels on the CD

can only get 60 fps at low colour but still looks ok to me amazing fun and if you want best performance use low colour

cant find where the FULL game actually installed there was this other thing that I chose but launchbox didn't like it BECAUSE it wasn't the game and setup.exe wasn't workin so I gave up after 30 mins of serachin my pc with help of cortana

Game runs fine as high as 640x480, but any higher it crashes out on me. I never played this game when it was released, but it's pretty fun. I'll stick to the dos version in dosbox for now, not sure if the windows version in wine would do 800x600 or not.
