How to Play
The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, it works fine. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Guide and Notes for details
Install & play guide:
- Mount the disc image of CD1 or DVD. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
- Launch the installation (if autorun doesn't work - simply launch the installation from Setup.exe inside the disc). It is recommended to install the game not in default path but in some other, non-system folder, like
C:/Games/X-Men - The Official Game, so you won't have troubles with NoCD or fixes - For CD version: when the installation process will ask for the next disc, mount the disc images of next CDs. All discs must be mounted in the same drive, so first un-mount the disc image of previous disc and only then mount the next disc image
- After you installed the game - use the fixed executable or NoCD (check Notes below for details), simply copy Xmen.exe from the archive and replace Xmen.exe inside the game folder. Fixed executable is based on NoCD but should have a better performance on modern 64-bit systems, especially on Windows 8 or newer OS
- Open the game folder and find Xmen.exe. Right-click on Xmen.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP" and "Run as Administrator"
- Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work in compatibility mode with Windows XP - try to launch it in compatibility mode with other version of Windows (Windows 95, 98, 2000, etc.)
Notes:
- If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
- You may get error at the end of installation - don't worry, the game will be installed properly, it's just some unknown bug of the installer
- It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game audio and video
- The game works on DirectX 9, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
- If you're playing the game on modern 64-bit systems, we recommend to use the fixed executable. That fix is based on old NoCD but has the better performance on modern 64-bit systems, especially on Windows 8 or newer OS. But if you have troubles with that fix, as alternative you can use old NoCD to play the game without the disc. To use the fix or NoCD, simply replace Xmen.exe in game folder
- NoCD or fixed executable file are required for the launch because the game was protected with SafeDisc 4 DRM that doesn't work on modern systems. NoCD "breaks" DRM protection and allows to play the game without the disc. If you see the error that there's not enough space on the hard drive when you copy NoCD files - re-install the game in non-system folder, like
D:/Games/X-Men - The Official Game, Windows Protection may block copying of files to system folders (likeC:/Program FilesorC:/Windows) - By default the game supports only 4:3 screen ratio, but you can play the game in wide screen resolutions by editing Windows Registry. To edit Windows Registry run the Registry Editor (press Win+R -> enter regedit.exe) and follow the instruction from WSGF page. With that method you can run the game even on ultrawide display or multi-monitor setup, check this thread for more details and WSGF page for example screenshots
- You probably will want to change FOV (Field of View) in the game, to have a better in-game camera, the instructions how to do that are available on the same WSGF page
- Sometimes the game may crash to desktop at random moments. If the game crashes and you cannot complete some level - use the complete savegame with all levels unlocked
- If you get the error about DirectX 9 when you run the game, try to run it with one of display wrappers or through 3D Analyze utility. Also, if you have any graphics issues, running the game through display wrapper or 3D Analyze utility should help too
- The game supports Surround Sound and EAX but that technology doesn't work on modern systems. If you want to play the game with Surround Sound, use one of DirectSound3D restoration software
- The game has extremely glitchy 3D positional audio calls that play in random directions. If you experience that glitch, try to use DSOAL utility to fix it
- The game has controller support so you can play the game with gamepad. If the game doesn't recognize your controller - try to use one of the additional tools from PCGamingWiki guide for controllers
- Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki page if you have troubles

If you get the direct x9 error you can try launch the executable with 3D-Analyze https://games.softpedia.com/get/Tools/3D-Analyze.shtml
Widescreen fix???? please!!!!!
I installed with 0 issue and the game launches but I'm getting 6FPS at best. Followed all the steps, running in compatibility with the fixed .exe but the game is running terribly. Anyone having the same issue and/or knows of a fix? Do I need to use a wrapper like vooDoo?
I cannot seem to run this game on my Steam Deck despite the setup.exe successfully installing the game. Proton will not run this game, no matter what.
Can someone add a original exe file of the game without any widescreen fixes? Because I'm playing on 1280x1024 screen and it messes up my game.
I'm trying to use the replacement exe for my physical copy version of the game, but even following all the steps, it keeps saying it can't initialize Direct3D and to set the accelleration to full?
CD version 3 link not found. T_T
Cool but unnecessary hard game towards the middle of it. Wish it could be more easier, especially when you play as Wolverine. You know, because he basically can't be killed by any regular ways.
Hi I cannot get this working, I keep getting direct x9 3d error. I installed Direct x9 and also enabled direct play. I am using windows 10 pro edition. I tried all the version and same error. Thanks
We have updated the game, added the version of 4 CDs for easier download plus fixed exe-file that helps to launch the game on modern systems
think it misses a cd or two...
