Destruction Derby 2

Windows - 1996

Destruction Derby 2 is the arguably superior sequel to the original Destruction Derby that offers more of the same no-holds-barred action and mayhem with new tracks and many improvements and features not seen in the original, including a pit stop feature that allows you to (finally) repair your car.

Gameplay-wise, DD2 is identical to the first game: your goal is to gain points by winning races or "creatively" crashing your opponents. The sameness is obviously not a bad thing in this case, because Psygnosis already had a hit on their hands with the first Destruction Derby. It's essentially the same game, but with sharper graphics, smoother animations, and more of everything. You now can compete against up to 19 rival drivers across seven tracks (each longer and more detailed than the ones in Destruction Derby). You can even compete in the incredibly difficult "total destruction" bowls for competition play. Multi-player now supports up to ten players for a truly madcap mayhem.

The graphics, as mentioned earlier, is even better than the already-jaw-dropping original game. You not only can see little details in the tracks and scenery, but also animated spectators who will run for their lives when a car crashes over the wall ;) Damage presentation is much more parts-specific this time around: you will notice exploding radiators, flying fenders, engine fires, and more. Fortunately, you can now access the new "pit stop" feature after a certain amount of damage. This lets you select the part you want to repair and try to "pump out" the damage as fast as you can since you only have five seconds.

Overall, Destruction Derby 2 is a must-have for fans of demolition racing. If you like the first game, you will probably like this sequel even more. The graphics even look good on my HP notebook without a 3D card. Two thumbs up, way up!

The rip version doesn't work under x64 systems. If you want to play a Windows version of Destruction Derby 2, forget it. I own a CD released by CD Projekt for Polish market, but I still needed DosBox to run the game. Of course I mean an MS-Dos version. I needed to "mount" a drive G for the game, F for the CD and then "install" the game (is the order wrong? If yes, tell me what I did wrong. You deserve a beer).
Beforehand I had to change the processor type from "auto" to "pentium slow" in the config file (I've been looking for my answer, but how slow is the emulated processor? 166 MHz? Slightly higher?). I copied the whole CD contents into a separate folder. I "installed" the game through one of batch files located there (under DosBox 0.74-3). I've waited some time (20 minutes, up to 30 mins) for the file to unzip the contents. WAIT PATIENTLY!
By the way - has any of the player noticed there's a bug in dd2hires.exe file? I mean - when you start a race on SCA Motorplex, you start from 20th position even if you're actually 1st. This bug doesn't occur in standard resolution of DD2, but I prefer 640x480 resolution to 320x200. Both refer to DosBox. Don't you believe me? Try it! I don't know where I could have reported this serious bug as Psygnosis doesn't exist anymore; Reflections is owned by UbiSoft and has forgotten about the game. None of the other publishers know this game was published in 1996 (March, I think)...
If you want to run the Windows version under an x64 operation system, still forget it. A virtual Windows 95 or 98 won't help.
@TurboDymoMan - The game doesn't have a cockpit view.
Ofc it's a game which is tough to pass in the later levels - notably when you're starting from the 15th spot.

The rip works but it's not at the original speed. It plays at like 15-20fps on newer hardware. It's so slow compared to what it suppose to be.

The game is starting and the main menu shows up in Microsoft Windows XP Pro, but the display of the main menu is broken. It looks like a overlapped error screen or overlapped several times in many different lines, so it's completely impossible to navigate to anything in this game.

Unfortunately, It's saying corrupt image file. I remember this was one of the first games I ever played and I played it a lot.

Really loved the first game, but I never warmed to Destruction Derby 2. The graphics were crisper BUT the character was lost, the racing and crashing, taking opponents out just seemed to pale in comparison to the first game. The first game I replayed over and over and over again. After a few weeks I just sold this game. Still would love to see more destruction derby games on modern platforms.

Hey KATOTOTAPADO By accident you did not started a total destruction event? That is the only mode when AI aggroing on you.

Katototapado 02 Jan. 2022

I had a legitimate copy of this game, but I couldn't complete a single event as every single AI car was always aggroed on me, race or demolition derby. It was always a massacre with me being obliterated in seconds.

It was probably some copy protection punishment, but I swear it was a legitimate copy.

Why some of the games are stored in .bin and .cue files and they are named as iso? Why isn´t there variant for .iso file always. This variant could be as alternative version. I cannot open this type of files natively in windows 10 and I don´t want download any third party programs to get install files from that .bin
