After installing the latest QuickTime, it started working on Windows 11! Tx!

DaLuke 24 Feb. 2026

how did y'all got it to work on either Steam Deck or W11?
On Steam Deck when following the steps here, it launches the setup but its already at 99% and not progressing. (proton 3.7)
On Windows, even with Quicktime installed - it just launches in the background (i can see it in Task Manager) but nothing is happening. (using compat mode and administrator ofc)

Help would be much appreciated, Agents!

Between @XESF and @eustonr posts I got the game working on the steamdeck, many thanks to you both.

I have noticed that the video tends to have horizontal lines going through it when there's movement Are you seeing this too?

XESF 30 Sep. 2025

Finally manage to get X-Files running based on partial steps from @EUSTONR.
Installshield had issues on all proton version, the game got stuck on 99%.
I used a windows machine to install the full DVD version and copy all files to steam deck. I added the game as non-steam game, set proton to 3.7, installed Quicktime 7.6, set Quicktime advanced options as Safe Mode and Wine to Windows XP. Set resolution for internal and external display toggled with Game resolution 640x480 with Mouse as trackpad.
Game is now running perfectly, just in time to play it as I've finish watching Season 3 :)

Nothing works for me to get the game working on Steam deck, either by using CD or DVD version. QuickTime 3, 4, 7.2 or 7.6. I always get a gray or black screen and nothing happens.

I have the original CD box set of the XFiles game I bought back in 1998 - I was a real X Files nut back then. I paid full price on launch. I still have it complete too. I played it back in the day but I have to admit the game was a disappointment for me back then, as Mulder and Scully were little more than cameos in the game. Oh well.
I have just got this to work on my steamdeck - well chuffed :) - here's how
1) The DVD version available here does not have any copy protection - so no "nocd" patch is required.
2) Go to desktop mode on the steamdeck. Download the DVD version, and mount the ISO on the steamdeck - you can use the commandline (mount -o loop file.iso /mnt) if you want, or use the included umount/mount iso program (search for it in the discover app, and install it - browse to the iso, right click on it and mount it to a filesystem)
3) Add a non steam game to steam. browse to the install.exe in the ENGLISH dir on the iso. THIS IS THE KEY STEP !!!!! set compatibility mode and use proton v3 (yes v3 - dont use experimental, or anything new - it wont work - I wasted hours due to this)
4) run the game installer from steam using the game link you just created. It should install, and choose the defaults. When you get to the Quicktime install, cancel it (Quicktime v3 wont work). You can choose to continue, but it will fail anyway.
5) Once you have done the install and exited the installer, use protontricks to do the following
- select the prefix you just created.
- Set the windows version to xp (winecfg)
- install the latest quicktime (install a dll/component)
The quicktime install will warn about a bug.
- run up explorer in proton tricks, and start quicktime. Go preferences - advanced - and set safemode (GDM) (instead of directx)
6) In Steam, change the game to point to the XFiles.exe in the location you just installed. It will be in
/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata//pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Fox/The X-Files DVD
7) Nearly there! The final step is to copy all the files in the English directory on the DVD to the above directory. You just need the vob, X* directories, and all the files in the English dir root.
8) You can then unmount the ISO and forget about it - you dont need it anymore.
9) Final step - boot back into game mode, and (Important!) set the resolution of the game to 640x480.
10) I lied - one more step - change the controls to use the trackpads as a mouse as you like, and start playing. It will prompt on first run whether you want performance or quality - choose performance.
Have fun!

I can't click on the Gold Bar hospital in disc 6. I don't know what to do to fix it. Any ideas?

X_Player 20 Nov. 2024

Works great for me on Windows 11 23H2.
1. Install QuickTime 7.6
2. Mount DVD
3. Run English\setup.exe in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode (ignore 16-bit error at the end of the installation)

munkey 16 Sep. 2024

this does not seem to be the whole game i think because i have the disks its 7 or so dvd disks which is much bigger than this, maybe its missing something.

Has anyone tried to run this game on Steam Deck?

1
Crazy Com 28 Aug. 2024

So, I wanted to play the German Version but setup.exe did nothing on Windows 11. But I got it to work (even without Disc-(ISO)-Change) - maybe it works with english version too:

1. Install latest Quicktime-Version (I didn't have any crashes with that)
2. Create a folder for the game somewhere on the HDD, where your User-Account has Write-Permissions (the game creates savegames into that folder)
3. Mount Disc 1
4. Copy all Contents from the folders "MININST" and "MEDINST" from Disc 1 into the Game-Folder on the HDD (copy not the folders itself, just copy the contents from the folders)
5. Copy also the folders XN and XV and the file NAV1.NMV from the Disc into the folder on the HDD
Note: In many Copy-Operations, you get the prompt, that some files already exist. It doesn't matter, if you choose Overwrite or Keep
6. Mount Disc 2
7. Copy all files and folders into the game folder on the HDD
8. Repeat Steps 6&7 with Discs 3-7
9. Start XFILES.EXE in the game folder and enjoy

I got DVD version working with Windows 10 Pro 64bit

1. mount ISO
2. copy all DVD content to some folder in your SSD/HDD(i got "Insufficient memory available to run Setup" error if i tried to install from DVD)
3. dont start autorun*!!! go to where you copied files and open "English" folder and start "SETUP.EXE"
4. install game(dont remember was Task Manager Analyze Wait Chain trick needed or not, if setup hangs use it), later you get 16bit error but ignore it.
5. play and enjoy :) you need to keep DVD mounted to play game.

I already have Quick Time installed, if you dont have it, install.

*with autorun i got 16 bit errors and setup didnt start, i may be wrong but looks like autorun tries to install GM( looks like its 16bit win program and cant run 64bit os).

4
SoulsBornFan9851 11 Nov. 2023

If there is a way you can get this to work on Windows 11 though, any of you, much appreciated. The "Analyze Wait Chain" and ending the process of the file holding the setup.exe back within the "Analyze Wait Chain" is not working for Windows 11, it simply refuses and says it's not compatible for 64bit systems.

Otherwise, 'The X-files Game' works great on Windows 10 for me, which obviously, runs on a 64bit system. Maybe there is another work around for this?

4
SoulsBornFan9851 07 Nov. 2023

I managed to get it working today. Thank-you all for your different and various comments, it helped me experiment based on my PC specific configurations. I have a PlayStation copy of this game and have been wanting to play the PC version of this game for over 20-years, since I was a adolescent.

As stated you need to have Quicktime versions listed, plus, yes, I also had to run "Task Manager" and go into "details' option and look for setupexe after trying to run it and right clicked that to enter "Analyze Wait Chain" and "end process" of the file holding back the "setupexe".

NOTE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE A DATA COMPRESSION, ENCRYPTION AND ARCHIVING TOOL LIKE "WINRAR" INSTALLED PRIOR- Due to "File Association" The DVD ISO, will appear to be a in the form of a RAR or ZIP. But it is also the ISO Disc Image Itself and unlike other computers without such "File Association" its not as simple as 'mounting' after 'right click' or 'Double Clicking". There a little more to it with a PC configured this way.

After extracting the game files via it's installer function (RAR or Zip), still keep that file, as its also the ISO image to be used every time you launch the game. Before launching the game, make sure you 'Right Click' that very same DVD ISO, a list of options should appear, then choose the "Open With" option, after which simply choose for it to opened with window explorer, this will make the computer think that the 'DVD' has been mounted as an external DVD disc. The game should work fine with that.

calhoun_rhetoret 04 Nov. 2023

in case you have trouble running the setup on Windows 10 (you run it, cursor turns for a few seconds, then nothing happens), try running Task Manager, going to Details tab, find SETUP.EXE, right-click on it and Analyze Wait Chain. In my case there were two programs waiting, there's an option to do "End Process" on them, - first for the first one, then again Analyze Wait Chain, and do End Process on the second one - then the setup starts. an error towards the end about 64-bit version of Windows can be ignored. Then the game works as expected, at least in the beginning.

To anybody having difficulty getting this running in modern Windows.... you have to find an updated version of flash player that will both install AND work with the game.

After doing that, the game worked flawlessly. Hope this helps someone.

Yeah. The dvd tries to install gamemaster. I suspect it is some kind of malware.
It does have an uninstall program though.

1
Hubber 31 Aug. 2023

The auto run on the dvd installs some weird program. Not certain what it is. Then it installs the game.
I will have to look into it.

At the time I loved everything X-Files in the 90s and early 00s so I had to get this game. I found it ok, loved the graphics at the time and got engrossed in the X-Files universe. I do think the series has dated badly now, but it did have it's moment, long before the identities of Mulder and Scully were swapped around and the characters messed around with too much. Great at the time.

Finally got this game to work on Windows 10. Firstly you need to install QuickTime, and version 6 worked for me with very little fuss. Now download each iso file and put them all in one folder. Then double click or mount ISO disc 1, then find the setup.exe and right click it and change its compatibility setting to Windows XP. Now launch setup and the install shield will start, this could take a while so be patient, when it starts select full installation, which means you won't need to swap discs in game, an error message told me incorrectly that I did not have enough hard drive space but just select ignore to get around this. The game will now install and at various points it will ask you change disc, and to do this press the windows key to return to the desktop, then unmount/eject the current disc and then mount the disc that is required, return to the installation and confirm, although sometimes you may need to repeat this for it to be accepted. Once installed open the game folder and find the X Files game launcher, right click it and change compatibility to Windows 98, and now you can launch the game. Barring the odd minor glitch the game should work but it's best to go to options and select 'best performance' and then gradually alter the individual graphics settings to see what you can get away with.

The game was released on PS, PC, and Mac in 1998.

I tried to run the PC version of the game but could not.

A better option would be to download a PS version of the game.

You can downloaded the PS rom of this Xfiles game from Cdromance or other rom site. Also, you can use the ePSXe emulator to play the original PlayStation game.

Lastly, I suggest that you also download the PS2 rom of the game X Files: Resist or Serve from Cdromance as well. This game was released in 2004.

The PS version is set during Season 3 of the TV show and the PS2 version during Season 7 of the show.

To get this to work on windows 10, download the DVD ISO. Also, download QuickTime 7.6. Install QuickTime. Double click on the ISO, go to the English subdirectory, and run the setup.exe file with compatibility mode for Windows XP. This should install with a few 16 bit errors. Now double click on the DVD ISO to open it, and then run the X-Files program All should work well. Because you have the ISO open, the program assumes this is the disc. And you won't be prompted to flip the disc.

Got the DVD version just fine, however none of the autorun/setup.exe want to work in win10 even with Quicktime installed and compatibility mode enabled... any ideas?

g_wiz 29 Mar. 2021

This version works great on Windows 10. Needed to install QuickTime, but everything else works right. I have this game on ps1, but there are glitches when playing it on the ps2 or ps3. This version works great so far, and is really fun if you are a fan of the show or FMV games.
